MEPHISTO (1981)

Oscar for best foreign film in 1982

“(…) If the film Mephisto has enchanted us so, it is because of the many impressive, revealing and disturbing scenes. The narrative moves in bounds and omissions: one sequence chases another, without transition. Everything goes so fast. (…) But let’s not forget the actors. In the role of the gloriously damned, Austrian actor Klaus Maria Brandauer is fantastic. He goes completely overboard…but to just the right scale. (…) His is a masterly performance.” Gilbert Salachas, Télérama nº 1666, 16 December 1981

“ (…) Mephisto is a spectacular piece of work. István Szabó shows us here that a film of entertainment can address the most complicated of subjects without making ideological concessions.” André Cornand, La Saison cinématographique 1982

SYNOPSIS

In Germany in the 1930s, Hendrik Hoefgen is an ambitious actor who is more worried about his artistic career than the rise of the Nazis. He marries the daughter of a famous professor to get into the Berlin Theatre, and takes advantage of the Nazis getting into power to become a highly popular Mephisto, in Goethe’s play Faust. But he soon realises that he is part of a world ruled by hate and fear.
