In the early 1980s in East Berlin, best-selling author Georg Dreyman and his lover, the actress Christa-Maria Sielland, are seen as part of the intellectual elite of the Communist state, though privately they do not ascribe to its values. Christa arouses the curiosity of the Ministry of culture, and a secret agent called Wiesler is sent to investigate. But as the investigation progresses, he finds himself increasingly fascinated by the couple.
