In the middle of winter, Mike Nickerson and Tony Rodriguez turn up at a small house in Connecticut, the home of Harry Wayne, an aging and dithery writer, his daughter Martha, her fiancé Bill Schmidt and their young child. The two men are Bill’s former comrades in arms from Vietnam. Nickerson and Rodriguez had been on trial and sent to prison for two years for the rape and murder of a young Vietnamese woman who they had mistaken for a spy. Bill was the one who had blown the whistle. Rodriguez is ready to let bygones be bygones, but Nickerson does not feel the same way.
