John Rambo is a hero from the Vietnam War, wandering from town to town looking for his former comrades in arms.
As he crosses a small town looking for something to eat, Sheriff Will Teasle arrests him for vagrancy. Locked up and badly treated by abusive police officers, Rambo becomes enraged and flees into the woods after having wounded several officers.
Hunted down like an animal, the former soldier kills a policeman in self-defence. From then on, the local police and the national army deploy substantial manpower to find the fugitive. Colonel Trautman, his mentor, intervenes in an attempt to avoid both sides killing each other while Rambo, cornered and wounded, goes to war against the authorities.
